Super “dime bright” hen
(female) steelhead (Oncorhynchus
mykiss). This is how
they look when they enter the
rivers fresh from the lake
(in this case, Lake Michigan).
|
Great color on this buck
(male) - the reel is
a centerpin reel, not
a fly reel
|

This
strain, called Skamania,
are noted for being
the strongest, most
acrobatic strain…
|

A
beautiful fall steelhead.
|
Caught
in a small creek in
Wisconsin – didn’t
weigh him, but wow
was he heavy!
|
Check
out the girth on this
buck – jumped
4 or 5 times too…
|
German
brown trout – 19
pounds. During the
fall steelhead run,
these fantastic trout
are also in the rivers.
|
Another
very large brown trout.
|
A
big female brown caught
on New Year’s
Day. Note the water
dripping from the fish – these
fish are only out of
the water long enough
for a QUICK picture
or two – then
back in they go…
|
A
beautiful textbook
example of a German
Brown Trout.
|
One of my largest steelhead.
Lots of snow and
ice - water
temp 33 degrees.
|
A “torpedo” shaped
hen – super strong!
|
A
just-released steelhead
taking his time before
swimming back to the
deep water…
|
Awesome
blood-red coloring
on this male.
|
A
large December buck
steelhead – great
fish…
|
A
gator-headed steelhead – this
guy jumped about 10
times!
|
Waist
deep in 33 degree water…
|
|
Beautiful
brook trout (Salvelinus
fontinalis) from an
inland Wisconsin stream.
|
Largemouth
bass (Micropterus salmoides)
from a local Wisconsin
lake.
|
My “dear
ole” dad fishing
a spring-fed trout
stream in southwestern
Wisconsin. This is
called the “driftless” area,
where the glaciers
didn’t go through
and flatten everything
in their paths. So – the
area is full of rolling
hills…
|
A
nice muskie (Esox masquinongy).
This fish and the northern
pike are kind of like
the great white sharks
of fresh water. Rows
of razor sharp teeth,
aggressive – top
of the food chain!!
|
Northern
pike (Esox lucius)
- a large predatory
fish – fishing
for them is popular
in Canada and Europe
too.
|
Releasing
a steelhead…unlike
many salmon, that die
after spawning, trout
like this go back to
the Lakes again and
may return to the rivers
in the following years.
|
Another
spring-fed Wisconsin
trout stream. Many
a song and lyric idea
has come from these
days…
|
An
ominous sunrise on
Lake Michigan. I watched
this leading edge of
a storm approach for
30 minutes – awesome!
